Buying guide
Best Dutch oven for sourdough under £50 (UK guide)
What size, shape and material of cast iron pot you need for sourdough, the lid-knob and oven-temperature details listings bury, and budget Dutch ovens on Amazon UK.

Ask any experienced home baker what single purchase made the biggest difference to their sourdough, and many will say a cast iron pot. A heavy lidded pot traps the steam that escapes from the dough in the first 15–20 minutes of baking. That humid air keeps the crust soft and stretchy while the loaf expands (oven spring), and then – once you take the lid off – lets the crust set, colour and crackle. Domestic ovens, especially fan ovens, vent steam quickly; the pot creates a tiny professional steam oven inside yours.
You don't need a £300 heritage casserole to get that effect. A plain enamelled or pre-seasoned cast iron pot of the right size does the job. This guide explains which details actually matter, then lists pots on Amazon UK that were within (or close to) a £50 budget when we checked them.
The short version
- Size: 24–26cm diameter, roughly 4–5 litres, suits a standard 500g-flour loaf.
- Material: cast iron – enamelled (easy care) or pre-seasoned bare iron (tough, rust-prone if neglected).
- Check the lid knob: it must be rated for at least 230–250°C, or be metal. Many cheap pots fail here.
- Check the weight: a 5L cast iron pot weighs 5kg or more. You'll be lifting it out of a hot oven.

How we chose these pots
We haven't baked in these pots ourselves. We shortlisted cast iron pots listed on Amazon UK by capacity and diameter (for a standard loaf), material, stated oven safety and how clearly the listing describes the lid and handles. We favoured pots whose listings state an oven-safe temperature or an all-metal lid, and we excluded aluminium casseroles, which don't hold heat the way iron does. Because prices move constantly we don't show them; the under-£50 grouping reflects listings at the time we checked.

Size and shape
A 500g-flour sourdough loaf is roughly 18–22cm across once baked. You want a few centimetres of clearance so you can lower the dough in without burning your knuckles, and so the loaf doesn't touch the sides as it springs:
- 22cm / 3L pots are tight for a standard loaf and better for small 300–400g-flour loaves.
- 24–26cm / 4–5L pots are the sweet spot for most recipes. A 25cm oval dough usually fits a 26cm round pot.
- 28cm+ / 6L+ pots work but are heavy, take longer to preheat and may not fit a compact UK oven with the door closed. Measure your oven.
Height matters less than diameter, but a shallow pot is easier to load. That's the appeal of the "combo cooker" design, where the shallow skillet becomes the base and the deep pot becomes the lid (see the Lodge note below).
Enamelled vs bare (pre-seasoned) cast iron
Enamelled cast iron has a glassy coating. It doesn't need seasoning, won't rust and is easy to clean. The trade-off: enamel can craze or chip with thermal shock, and some manufacturers advise against heating an empty pot at very high temperatures. Always read the care instructions; if they warn against empty preheating, preheat at a slightly lower temperature, or use the "cold start" method (put the dough in a cold pot and start the oven).
Bare, pre-seasoned cast iron (like Lodge) is almost indestructible and happy to be preheated empty at high heat. It needs to be dried promptly and given a light rub of oil occasionally, or it will rust in a damp British kitchen.
The details listings bury
- Lid knob rating. Phenolic (black plastic) knobs on budget casseroles are often rated well below bread-baking temperatures. If the listing doesn't state the knob is metal or rated to 250°C+, assume it isn't. A replacement stainless steel knob is a cheap fix.
- Maximum oven temperature. Look for 240–260°C. Most sourdough recipes bake at 230–250°C.
- Weight. A 4–5L cast iron pot weighs around 5kg empty. Large loop handles make it far easier to lift with oven gloves.
- Internal colour. Light enamel interiors show staining; dark interiors hide it. It's cosmetic only.
Dutch ovens under £50 on Amazon UK

Best all-round budget pick
Amazon Basics Enamelled Cast Iron Dutch Oven, 4.1L, round
- Enamelled cast iron
- 4.1 litres
- Oven safe to 260°C (per listing)
- Approx. 5.1kg
The listing gives the details we want: a 4.1L capacity that suits a standard loaf, enamelled cast iron with a cast iron lid, and an oven rating of 260°C – comfortably above typical sourdough baking temperatures. It is hand-wash only. Colours are listed as separate variants and their prices differ noticeably, so check a few colours before you buy.

Best for slightly bigger loaves
Andrew James Cast Iron 5L Round Casserole Dish with Lid
- Enamel-coated cast iron
- 5 litres
- Self-basting dimples in lid
- Cast iron lid
A 5L pot gives a little extra room for 25cm oval doughs and larger loaves. The listing markets it explicitly for bread baking and says no seasoning is required. The self-basting dimples under the lid make no difference to bread but are handy for stews. Check the listing for the lid-knob material before baking at 250°C.

VonShef Enamelled Cast Iron Dutch Oven, round 4.7L
- Enamelled cast iron
- 4.7 litres
- Round with lid
At 4.7L this sits right in the middle of the ideal range. VonShef is a long-running UK kitchenware brand, which makes after-sales support easier than with some anonymous imports. As with every enamelled pot, confirm the stated maximum oven temperature and knob material on the listing.

Crystals 5L Enamelled Cast Iron Dutch Oven, 26cm round
- Enamelled cast iron
- 26cm diameter
- 5 litres
The 26cm diameter is a useful figure to have stated outright: it's wide enough for a 25cm oval bâtard as well as round loaves. This is a newer, lesser-known brand, so read the seller details and returns policy before ordering.
Worth stretching for: the Lodge combo cooker

Over budget – the baker's favourite design
Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Combo Cooker (3.2 quart)
- Pre-seasoned bare cast iron
- Shallow skillet + deep pot that swap roles
- 3.2 US quarts (about 3L) deep pot
This usually costs more than £50 in the UK, but it's worth knowing why bakers rave about the design. Bake upside down: the dough goes onto the shallow skillet (no lowering it into a deep, 250°C pot), and the deep half drops over it as the lid. Bare cast iron can be preheated empty at high heat without enamel worries. It's on the small side for very large loaves, and it needs occasional oiling to prevent rust.
If you'd rather have a deeper bare-iron pot from the same brand, the Lodge 5-quart Dutch oven Ad is the classic, though it also tends to sit above £50.

Using your pot well
- Preheat pot and lid together for 30–45 minutes at your baking temperature (unless the maker advises otherwise).
- Use a parchment sling – a strip of baking paper under the dough – to lower the loaf in safely.
- Lid on for 20 minutes, lid off for 20–25 minutes is a typical starting point; adjust for your oven.
- Wear long oven gloves. Forearm burns on the rim of a hot pot are the most common Dutch-oven injury. Our budget equipment guide includes a sensible pair.
No pot yet? Alternatives
A heavy baking tray plus a roasting tin of boiling water on the shelf below creates some steam. An upturned large stainless steel bowl over the loaf on a preheated tray also traps steam. Neither is as reliable as cast iron, but they'll get you baking this weekend.
The bottom line
For most UK home bakers, a 4–5L enamelled cast iron pot rated to at least 240°C is the best value upgrade in sourdough. The Amazon Basics 4.1L is the safest budget choice on paper, the 5L options suit bigger loaves, and the Lodge combo cooker is the one to save up for if you want bare iron and easy loading.
